Since I have lived here for only the last 8 or 9 years, I think I can comment some. I was dragged to Bakersfield kicking and screaming. I heard all the hick jokes and the talk of the backward way things are done. I did not want to come. What a somewhat pleasant surprise. We all know the good things we have here, let's talk about the not so good.
Ever try to stop downtown on a Sunday morning for a cup of coffee? I prefer a cup of coffee and a danish before the 10 a.m. service. Won't happen here. The downtown area is closed up tight for most of Sunday. Or browse the shops on a warm summer evening during the street fair? Not here! Want to eat something besides meat? Not in this town, that is unless you go to a steak house and get FRIED shrimp or something just as bad. I have seen good eating establishments dry up and blow away. Won't be supported here.
The most glaring problem is the ignorance that is blasted out in our newspapers and on the airwaves. True the word is getting out to the gangbangers in L.A. that the cops here shoot first and ask questions later. That's a good thing, let the word out we won't tollerate trouble here. But, we will not only tollerate, but embrace predjudice and civil rights violations. It also seems ok to the District Attorney to abuse animals as well. That is the kind of thing that discourages anyone from coming here. Let alone trying to get someone to invest some money here.
One last thing. If you live here too long you wouldn't even notice, the service in this town sucks. It is not even,
