The threat of rolling blackouts prompted Shafter High School administrators to reschedule graduation.

"We moved it up because of the energy crisis," said Principal Charles Rekosh. "We want to avoid a rolling blackout. We want to get as much light as possible."

Nearly 10 percent of Shafter's 274 graduates received California Gold Seal Diplomas.

"From the time they've been freshmen, they've shown their top academic potential," Rekosh said. "They represent us well in the classroom and in extracurricular activities. We're proud of them."
