Nearly 580 Bakersfield High School seniors graduated Thursday at Griffith Field, but Principal David Reese said this wouldn't be the students' last encounter with the field.

"They are making a contribution to the football field, either putting in some fencing or something," Reese said. "The stadium is really old and so we're all trying to pitch together to save Griffith Field."

Reese said the students were still deciding what improvements they would make to the field.

The 7 p.m. graduation included the presentation of 18 Golden State Seal Diplomas. Reese said this was the first year for the special diplomas. To receive the special diplomas, students were required to pass six state exams in core academic areas, he said.
